The gaussmeter so constructed and calibrated was used to determine the magnetic susceptibility of a
sample of Monel 400. The same solenoid as was used in the calibration of the Gauss meter was employed
in this determination. A sample of 42 gms of Monel in the form of a rod about 12 cm long was mounted
in the core of the solenoid. Careful measurement of the field for different currents yielded a section
of the magnetic hysteresis loop which is essentially a plot of the magnetic susceptibility of the sample
with respect to the applied field intensity. This plot was subjected to a least squares regression fit to a
logarithmic function which gave an empirical measure of susceptibility against field H.
This function takes the form:
for 42 grams of Monel.
The susceptibility of monel varies with the applied field and so it
was necessary to determine part of the hysteresis loop for a sample of the metal. In this case
a sample of 42 gms of monel in the form of a rod about 12 cm in length was mounted in the core
of the solenoid used in the calibration experiments. Currents of different magnitudes were passed through
the solenoid while the magnetic flux was measured by observing the gaussmeter output when the current was reversed.
This enabled the determination of quite small changes in magnetic field.
