GREENSAND CASTING V

Making the Casting

When the melt has reached the required temperature, fluxes and additives have been applied, the melt should be stirred and then poured evenly into the runner. A spatula can be applied during the pour to prevent any slag entering the mould. When the mould is full, a pool of metal forms on the top of the cope around the runner. It is now important to allow the casting to cool evenly and thoroughly before opening the mould. Sand has an insulating property which makes the cooling process slower that it would be in air and this is generally desirable. Even small a casting should be left unopened for at least 5 minutes.
